Even for a man who’s spent six years demonizing his political enemies, President Obama’s speech Wednesday comparing Republicans to Iranian hardliners chanting “death to America” was a new low.
That was the message Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer brought to “The Kelly File” Wednesday night as he slammed Obama for ideological ignorance.
It was Obama, Krauthammer said, who really made “made common cause” with the Iranian hardliners who are dead set on their country obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“How can you negotiate if you have no conception of the real ideology and intentions of your enemy?” he asked.
But the greater concern, Krauthammer said, is that Obama seems to be “delusional” in not seeing that the people leading the “death to America” chants are the Iranian leaders and mullahs.
And that delusion was on full display during Obama’s speech at American University.
“Just because Iranian hardliners chant ‘death to America’ does not mean that’s what all Iranians believe,” Obama said.
“In fact, it’s those hardliners who are most comfortable with the status quo,” he said. “It’s those hardliners chanting ‘death to America’ who have been most opposed to the deal. They are making common cause with the Republican caucus.”
Against a backdrop of Obama campaigning on the idea that he would “bring this country together,” host Megyn Kelly noted the “toxic political climate” under the president and asked Krauthammer to respond.
“It’s vintage Obama,” he replied. “The demonization of his opponents, the lumping them together with people chanting ‘death to America,’ I must say is a new low for the president.”
A new low for a man who has seen plenty of lows when it comes to partisan politics.
Obama’s attack on the GOP set off a wave of criticism from pundits and politicians, with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calling on Obama to retract his words, according to Fox News.

Calling the president’s comments “bizarre and preposterous,” McConnell said in a statement that the “offensive rhetoric” should be rejected.
“Members of both parties have serious and heartfelt concerns about the Iran deal,” McConnell said. “These Democrats and Republicans deserved serious answers today, not some outrageous attempt to equate their search for answers with supporting chants of ‘death to America.’”
