U2 front man Bono is as legendary for his big heart as he is for the band’s music, but the artist’s effort this week to honor a woman who came to his assistance after a bicycle accident last year in New York City backfired when the women threw some nasty snark at him.
The crash resulted in serious injuries, including a compound fracture of Bono’s upper left arm, a fractured shoulder blade and fractures involving the orbit of his left eye. His recovery took months.
On Thursday, he was back in the Big Apple for a concert at Madison Square Garden, and he wanted to recognize those who had come to his aid, according to the New York Post.
“I am here today because some people — when I crashed my bike here in the city — a beautiful girl made a phone call to 911,” Bono said to the crowd of 20,000. “She’s from Denver, but she’s here tonight, and so is Engine 44, the firefighters that picked me up off the ground.”
The rock star then handed over the mic to the woman, whose beauty clearly did not penetrate the skin.
“I have to clarify, it’s Alyssa and I’m from D.C., not Denver,” she told the audience with a full measure of snark, according to the Post. “Bono, here’s what happened: I was running in Central Park, there was an accident. Obviously I had to stop and help because I’m not from New York, I’m from Virginia, where people are nice …”
Ouch!
The crowd started booing, but she wasn’t ready to surrender the spotlight.
“Sorry, New York,” she responded. “Anyhow, I called 911 because no one else was doing it.”
The booing from the crowd grew even more intense, prompting her to fire back: “People, he would not be here tonight if it weren’t for me!”
She continued to rant, but was completely drowned out by the crowd. Eventually, just as on that fateful day when Bono crashed his bike, a member of Engine 44 came to the rescue, yanking the mic out of the woman’s hand.
“She just went on and on and didn’t stop. I almost think she planned it, to just blast New Yorkers,” the firefighters said, according to the Post. “Eventually one of our guys yanked the mic out of her hand and gave it back. Knowing our guys, I’m sure they said something to her.”
She’s just wrong,” he added. “Bono should have revoked her ticket.”
