Update: The officials who reported the death of Jericho confirmed early Sunday that they were mistaken.

“Jericho is in fact alive and well and has adopted Cecil’s cubs. We were given 3 separate confirmed reports last night that is was Jericho,” the group stated on its Facebook page.

“We apologize for reporting that he had died but were confident that our sources were in fact correct,” the group said. “This was a case of mistaken identity, but a lion has in fact been killed…although we are relieved that it was not Jericho, we are not happy that yet another lion has been killed.”

The brother of Cecil the lion was killed by poachers on Saturday, according to officials at Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, CNN reported.

Unlike the unknown and unmentioned names of aborted babies that are being quartered and sold on the black market, Cecil became a household name when he was slain in the same region by an American dentist last week, leaving his brother Jericho to watch the cubs he left behind.

“It is with huge disgust and sadness that we have just been informed that Jericho, Cecil’s brother has been killed at 4pm today,” Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Saturday on Facebook, CNN reported.

“We are absolutely heart broken.”

According to Mail Online, there is some doubt brewing about the report, since “the team tracking his GPS said news of his death was ‘utter sensationalism.’ “

Something tells me we haven’t heard the end of the story.
