Walton County goes shopping on eBay for new Confederate flag – It has been two days since Walton County voted to replace its Southern Cross Confederate flag with an earlier “stars and bars” version. But in the latest twist to this controversy, a different flag is fluttering outside the North Florida courthouse: a rebel flag with seven stars, not the 13-star version commissioners approved after three hours of acrimonious debate Tuesday. RNC adds three top staffers in Florida – The RNC is solidifying its presence in Florida, adding a staff director and two other top operatives to work on the 2016 elections. Brian Barrett will serve as state director. Alex Garcia is deputy state director and director of Hispanic initiatives, and Ben Shankle is coming as data direction. Read more
GOP lawmaker: Subpoena Florida Supreme Court justices in redistricting battle – Rep. Mike Hill, R-Pensacola Beach, is not too pleased with the Florida Supreme Court’s decision to throw out congressional districts drawn by the Legislature, specifically ruling eight districts out of compliance with the constitution. He’d like to have a chat with the justices who made that ruling. If they don’t want to talk, he’d like to subpoena them. Read more
Jeff Miller won’t run for Florida Senate seat – Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., opted against a bid for the Senate in the Sunshine State on Thursday, winnowing an already crowded GOP field in the highly competitive contest. Miller opting out of the race is a surprise to Florida Republicans. Before the July 4 recess, Miller had called a handful of Republicans who were eyeing his Panhandle-based House seat to alert them of his Senate plans, and hired the top Republican consulting firm OnMessage to help prepare his bid. Lottery exploring ticket sales online and at bank machines – The Florida Lottery is considering selling lottery tickets online or alongside ATMs to combat relatively flat sales of some of the more well-known games. Lottery officials have asked companies seeking a contract worth at least $300 million to prove that they can sell tickets on the Internet or at ATMs and gas pumps. Read more
