A 911 dispatch operator who hung up on a caller trying to save a dying teenager has resigned from the job.
According to KOB-TV, Jaydon Chavez-Silver was shot when a gunman in a passing vehicle fired six bullets into a home where a party was taking place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 26.
A woman at the party called 911 for help.
The call was answered bydispatcher Matthew Sanchez, who provided anything but help.
A partial transcript of the phone call obtained by KOB-TV reads as follows:
Caller: (inaudible) I’m keeping him alive.
Sanchez: Is he not breathing?
Caller: Barely. (inaudible) Stay with me. Stay with me, OK. Good job, Jaydon.
Sanchez: Is he breathing?
Caller: He’s barely breathing. How many times do I have to f—ing tell you?
Sanchez: OK, do you what ma’am? You can deal with yourself. I’m not going to deal with this, OK.
Caller: No, he’s going to die.
The call ends there.
Sanchez was at first placed on administrative assignment, pending an investigation of the call, according to a statement released by Albuquerque Fire Department Chief David Downey.
Sanchez resigned Tuesday.
Chavez-Silver’s mother told NBC Nightly News on Tuesday that she hoped the hang-up didn’t delay her son getting help. She also hopes this incident doesn’t shake the public’s trust in first responders.
The Albuquerque Fire Department said in a statement Tuesday that an ambulance was dispatched to the scene at the beginning of the call.
