Pretending again that the Obama administration knows Islam better than radical Muslims themselves, a top White House official on Thursday said there is nothing “Islamic” about the terrorists who call themselves the “Islamic State.”
Speaking at a national security forum in Colorado on Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said it is “critical” to separate the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, from the religion of Islam to keep the terror organization from radicalizing U.S. Muslims, ABC News reported.
“[ISIS] would like to be referred to as ‘Islamic extremism’ because it therefore concedes that what they are saying and what they are doing occupies legitimately some form of Islam,” Johnson said in Aspen.
Saying he was not succumbing to “political correctness,” Johnson argued that describing Islamic-inspired extremism as “Islamic” undermines trust between authorities and the U.S. Muslim community.
Johnson further said his censored description of terror inspired by Islamic extremism has helped him to “build trust” within the U.S. Muslim community, which he says is an integral part of fighting extremism.
“If I went into these meetings calling it ‘Islamic extremism,’ I’d get nowhere,” he said.
Johnson said it’s “critical” that Americans go out of their way to let Muslims know they are welcome in the United States.
“I think it’s critical that in order to build our relationships and build our level of cooperation with the Islamic communities here, we have to say to them, ‘Look, we understand that what this depraved terrorist organization is doing is not part of your religion,’” he said.
Considering that the Department of Homeland Security has tried to argue that “right-wing extremism” is a major threat to national security, wouldn’t it be nice if the Obama administration extended the same courtesy it shows Islam to Confederate flag supporters and U.S. gun owners?
