One way or another, liberals will ultimately fall prey to their own liberty-stifling agenda and racially divisive rhetoric.
Democrat Mississippi state Rep. Brad Oberhousen is coming under fire for doling out free watermelons to his constituents on the Fourth of July.
The problem seems to be that Oberhousen is white, and many watermelon recipients were black.
Oberhousen’s challenger in the Democrat primary, Jarvis Dortch, who happens to be black, said he sees a big problem with the racial stereotyping of giving watermelons to potential voters, the Clarion-Ledger reported.
“Over the last week there has been an uproar on social media, and I have spoken with voters who felt insulted by my opponent’s, Brad Oberhousen, campaign tactics,” Dortch stated in a press release.
“Voters reported that Oberhousen, accompanied with a paid political hand, drove from house to house in rural Hinds County passing out watermelons to black voters.”

Oberhousen is defending what he simply views as a kind gesture, and told the Ledger he’s been passing out fresh produce for years to both black and white families.
“On this particular occasion, I was personally invited to several family functions in the county for the July 4th celebration,” Oberhousen said.
“Most knew of my access to fresh produce, including Smith County watermelons. Some of the families requested watermelons for their family functions. I provided them to those who requested, and some who saw them that day asked for extras.”
It wasn’t reported if Oberhousen was able access peaches, cherries, or any other non-offending fruit. But according to Dortch, pictures posted to social media of the watermelon exchanges went way over the line.

“As many have stated on Facebook, it’s shocking that an actual state lawmaker would have such poor judgment to not only do what he did but to posts pictures of the exchanges online,” Dortch said.
“How could Oberhousen be so insensitive to the racial stereotyping that these photos advance?” he asked, according to the Ledger.
Dortch is demanding an apology.
Oberhousen called Dortch’s attack immature and “proof” that he’s ill-equipped to handle a position in political office.
For now, Dortch isn’t getting an apology, but with the local election coming up on Aug. 4, that may change.
