O’Reilly tries to break Trump: “McCain shouldn’t be the whipping boy’

O'Reilly vs TrumpBill O’Reilly told presidential hopeful Donald Trump to “stick to the issues,” and avoid getting personal after the real estate mogul was heavily criticized for comments he made about John McCain’s time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Trump refused to walk back his controversial comments about Senator John McCain’s war record when he appeared on O’Reilly’s Fox News program on Monday.

“Hopefully I said it correctly,” Trump told O’Reilly.

O’Reilly told Trump that while he might have legitimate concerns over McCain’s record as a lawmaker, he was out of line when he told a Republican pollster on Saturday that McCain’s only “a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

He had made the comments while reacting to McCain calling some Trump supporters “crazies.”

“Come on, Donald! You know the way it came off wasn’t correct,” O’Reilly said, adding that Trump could have easily voiced his political points without resorting to a personal attack on POWs.

“No matter how you say it, what I said was correct,” Trump told O’Reilly, before criticizing McCain’s senate record on immigration and veteran’s issues.

O’Reilly admitted that Trump might be right about illegal immigration, but took issue with the criticism that McCain hasn’t done enough to help veterans, telling Trump he “picked the wrong guy” to criticize.

“McCain shouldn’t be the whipping boy,” O’Reilly said, adding that McCain has “done some good work.”

“If there was a misunderstanding, I would totally take that back,” Trump said of his controversial remarks.

“But hopefully I said it correctly,” he told O’Reilly, “I’d like to see him do a much better job taking care of the veterans.”
