GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump is not letting up on Sen. John McCain, but he’s walking back derogatory statements he made in reference to the Arizona Republican’s six-year imprisonment in North Vietnam.
“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump sarcastically told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit Saturday. “I like people who weren’t captured.”
Moments later when he was questioned by reporters, he walked back his derision of McCain’s military service.
“If a person is captured, they’re a hero as far as I am concerned,” he said. ”But you have to do other things also.”
Trump, a Twitter fan, had no apologies for lashing out at McCain. Many of his fans appreciate his no holds barred attitude and ability to stand up to politically correct nonsense that’s killing America. He immediately banged out tweets that made it clear he isn’t sorry. He did, however, walk back the most inflammatory comment:
Captured or not, all our soldiers are heroes!

In addition to doing a lousy job in taking care of our Vets, John McCain let us down by losing to Barack Obama in his run for President!

The Veterans of our country have been treated like third class citizens for many years…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 18, 2015
….John McCain has failed miserably to fix the situation and to make it possible for Veterans to successfully manage their lives.

All he does is go on television is talk, talk, talk, but incapable of doing anything.

It’s a national embarrassment that an illegal immigrant can walk across the border and receive free health care and one of our Veterans…..
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 18, 2015
….that has served our country is put on a waiting list and gets no care.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 18, 2015
I have a proven track record supporting our Veterans. Veterans deserve universal access to care. VA scandal proves politicians are inept.

And he threw in his assessment of 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney for good measure.
Why would anybody listen to @MittRomney? He lost an election that should have easily been won against Obama. By the way, so did John McCain!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 18, 2015
Trump was asked about his own lack of a military service record, something that would not have been an issue but for his derision of McCain’s record.
Asked why he didn’t serve, Trump said, “I had student deferments and ultimately had a medical deferment because of my feet. I had a bone spur.” But Trump said he did not recall which foot was injured and instructed reporters to look up his records.
Trump added, “I was not a big fan of the Vietnam War. I wasn’t a protester, but the Vietnam War was a disaster for our country. What did we get out of the Vietnam War other than death? We got nothing.”
All in all, Saturday was not one of Trump’s better days.
