House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul says the attack on two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS).
McCaul, a Texas Republican, made his assessment during a previously scheduled visit to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, according to Voice of America.
“My judgment and my experience is that this was an ISIS-inspired attack,” McCaul said of the killings at two military recruitment centers. “It has been opened as a terrorism investigation by the FBI, which is a very significant event in this case.”
McCaul told reporters the investigation is still ongoing, but he said, based on his judgment, the Chattanooga murders were inspired by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. McCaul said terrorists based in Syria send out directives through social media to people in the United States, calling on them to attack U.S. military personnel and law enforcement officials.
McCaul said there are are investigations into Islamic State-related incidents going on in all 50 U.S. states, and that the terrorist ideology is “permeating society.”
McCaul said the United States needs to do more to counter the terrorist message. He is sponsoring legislation in Congress to create a new federal agency to counter violent extremism on U.S. soil.
The attack was carried out by Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, who once worked at an Ohio nuclear plant and whose father was once on a terrorist watch list
