CNN is reporting that four people are dead after two nearly simultaneous attacks against military and law enforcement personnel occurred about seven miles apart in Chattanooga, Tenn., today.
The four people were killed at the Naval Marine Reserve Center. Three more law enforcement personnel were wounded with one in critical condition – although it is not clear where the three who were wounded were shot.
It’s being reported that the shooter is also dead.
CBS reported:
Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke said five people died in all, including the gunman. Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that the shooting suspect was identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.
U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said officials were treating the attacks as an “act of domestic terrorism,” though FBI Special Agent in Charge Ed Reinhold said authorities were still investigating a motive.
Officials told CBS News correspondent David Marin that four U.S. Marines were among the dead and another was injured. The U.S. Marines released a statement saying that the injured Marine was a recruiter who was treated and released after sustaining a wound to the leg.
According to CNN:
Witnesses said a man sprayed bullets at the glass doors of a military recruiting center at a strip mall on Lee Highway, and the U.S. Navy tweeted Thursday that a shooting happened at a separate location — the Navy Reserve center on Amnicola Highway. The two sites are 7½ miles apart.
Fred Wright, a salesman at a nearby auto parts store, told CNN that after he heard gunshots, three people ran into his shop.
According to Hutcheson, they were hollering they thought “someone was shooting at them.”
“Sounded like it was 30, 40 shots to me,” Wright said, adding that he never saw a shooter.
More details are emerging as the situation breaks.
