NYPD union boss BLASTS city’s record payout to Eric Garner’s widow

garnerA record-breaking settlement of $5.9 million from the city of New York to the widow of a man who died after resisting arrest last June had police union bosses flabbergasted — calling the payout “obscene.”

“Where is the justice for New York taxpayers?” asked Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, according to the New York Post. “Where is the consistency in the civil system?”

The settlement is the largest ever for a wrongful-death case against the New York Police Department, although a grand jury declined to indict the officer who placed cigarette vendor Eric Garner in a choke-hold.

“Hopefully, the Garner family can find some peace and finality from today’s settlement,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

Mullins said a jury would have awarded a lesser figure to the family of Garner, who died last July after being placed in a choke-hold by police, basing their decision on “neither politics nor emotion,” the Post reported.

“In my view, the city has chosen to abandon its fiscal responsibility to all of its citizens and genuflect to the select few who curry favor with the city government,” Mullins told the Post.

“Mr. Garner’s family should not be rewarded simply because he repeatedly chose to break the law and resist arrest.”

The Garner family will also receive an undisclosed dollar settlement from the Richmond University Medical Center, their attorney said. The first responders dispatched to the scene where from the hospital.
