The brother of Kate Steinle, the San Francisco woman gunned down by an illegal immigrant, spoke out Tuesday against Republican presidential contender Donald Trump for commenting on the death of his sister without contacting the family first.
But his criticism now is at odds with a tweet he sent Trump only 11 days ago.
“I would hope that people would reach out and get our views, and our input in whats going on,” Ben Steinle told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Tuesday’s interview.
“You hear Donald Trump talking about Kate Steinle like he knows her,” he said. “I’ve never heard a word from his campaign manager, never heard a word from him.”
Trump took to social media Wednesday morning to respond to Steinle, offering an explanation on why he had not reached out to the family:
The tweet the business magnate referenced above is seen here — and differs considerably in tone from Steinle’s comments to Cooper:
@realDonaldTrump Thank you for speaking about my sister Kate. She was amazing, loving, and kind. An angel, my Kate. pic.twitter.com/uDQ58l6A8m

With the family having heard nothing from President Obama or anyone in his administration about the death of their loved one by a person in the United States due to liberal immigration policies favored by the White House, it’s likely that the issue is a sore point for the family.

But it’s also clear that Steinle’s political leanings had a good deal to do with his answers to the famously liberal CNN star.
While he acknowledged sending the July 4 tweet that thanked Trump, he explained that Trump was “so far right” he didn’t want to be associated with him.
Cooper asked Steinle if he now felt Trump was “using his sister.”
“In a way, yes,” he replied. “Sensationalizing is not the route we would like to go.”
“If you’re gonna use somebody’s name and sensationalize the death of a beautiful young lady, maybe you should call and talk to the family first and see what their views are,”he added.
Always good advice.
