American cities and counties that flout federal law to protect illegal immigrants are under new scrutiny thanks to the killing of a San Francisco woman by an illegal alien, but liberal churches that harbor illegal aliens have largely escaped the same kind of attention.
That might be changing as the illegal immigration issue dominates the headlines again.
On “Fox & Friends Weekend” Sunday, a prominent Dallas clergymen said liberal churches that protect illegal aliens are following “the Jesus of their imagination” not the one of scripture.
“We’re not going to check the immigration status of people who attend our church,” the Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of of First Baptist Church in Dallas, told host Leland Vittert. “But we’re also not going to harbor illegal immigrants who are criminals like some of these churches are doing.”
Jeffress added that congregations who offer illegal immigrants a safe haven are working under a false assumption.
“Look, a lot of these liberal churches that harbor illegal immigrants who are criminals say they are following the example of Jesus,” he said. “The only problem is they are following the Jesus of their imagination rather than the Jesus of the Bible.”
“Jesus was not this wimpy little guy who walked around munching sunflower seeds and saying nice things to people,” he said. “The real Jesus of the Bible said ‘render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.’ That is: Obey the government.”
Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Evangelical Seminary, agreed that churches should not harbor criminals, but added that those who show up in need should be helped.
“Christ says this is a place where you’re going to get a cup of cold water, where you’re going to get some shelter, where you’re going to get some hot food,” Land said. “And it’s not our job to be asking for green cards before we extend the mercy of Christ.”
