Michelle O. spends more than half-million bucks redoing WH dining room

michellestateroom0708newMichelle Obama’s expensive tastes aren’t limited to travel abroad.

The first lady’s latest contribution to the Republican is a remake of the White House State Dining Room costing more than a half-million dollars – or more than 10 times the annual median income of a U.S. household.

The money comes from a private fund that pays for upkeep of White House rooms that are open to the public – the White House Historical Association’s White House Endowment Trust – so no taxpayer money was involved.

But it’s still a good bet that if a Republican first lady spent that kind of cash on a home remodeling project, we’d be treated to no end of “income inequality” rhetoric from the liberals in the mainstream media.

Michelle’s coverage is, of course, glowing. Here’s how The Associated Press put it:

Silk draperies with vertical stripes of peacock blue and ecru replace curtains made of ivory silk brocade and designed with flowers, baskets and ribbons. The blue in the draperies echoes the “Kailua” blue that trims the modern-inspired china service the first lady unveiled in April and recalls the waters that surround President Barack Obama’s home state of Hawaii.

Mahogany side chairs and arm chairs, custom-made in North Carolina, replace a set that was upholstered in a golden yellow fabric.

The new chairs are done in a brown, grid-patterned “horsehair” fabric and trimmed with brass nail heads. They were modeled after arm chairs that President James Monroe acquired for the East Room in 1818 from a cabinetmaker in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood, according to White House curator William Allman.

And all that for only $590,000!

It’s money well spent, though, since once-proud news organization known as The AP assures Americans that Mrs. Obama’s latest renovation “will endure long after she leaves the building.”

Maybe, but only if a Republican president replaces her husband.

No doubt aware that only Republican first ladies are hammered for a hint of extravagance, Laura Bush managed to restrain herself from remaking the State Dining Room during the eight years her husband was in the Oval Office.

In fact, the last first lady to redo the room is running for president now.

That was Hillary Clinton, back in 1998.
