Will liberal politicians be asked to apologize for this?
Gay rights activist and one-role actor George Takei stirred national controversy – and outrage among the decent – when news of an interview he gave to a Phoenix television station got wide attention for an insult the supposedly caring lib hurled at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
“He is a clown in blackface sitting on the Supreme Court. He gets me that angry,” “Star Trek’s” Mr. Sulu said in an interview with Fox 10 in Phoenix.
Takei used the racial slur – and there’s no other way to describe it – to vent his anger over Thomas’s dissent in last week’s Supreme Court ruling that discovered (or invented) a constitutional right to marriage.
In his dissent, Thomas wrote that his opposition was based, in part, on the belief that all humans have an “inherent worth” – independent of any law.
According to The Hill:
“That vision is the foundation upon which this Nation was built. The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved,” Thomas wrote.
“Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them,” Thomas wrote. “And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away.”
Takei apparently didn’t understand what Thomas was saying, since he tried to prove his case by asking an irrelevant question: “For him to say slaves had dignity … I mean, doesn’t he know slaves were chained? That they were whipped on the back?”
We can assure the has-been actor that Clarence Thomas is well aware of what slavery entailed. (We can also assure him that Justice Thomas didn’t learn his history from “12 Years a Slave,” though maybe that’s how Hollywood stars get all their background.)
But since philosophy and history seem to be beyond the comprehension of the modern liberal mind — or at least completely unnecessary — let’s just ask a question: Those two paragraphs on human dignity are the thoughts of a “clown in blackface”? Do clowns discourse on the essential value of the human being? Whether in blackface or not, are musings about the worth of a human life the province of a fool?
Only in the demented mind of an American liberal in 2015 – when an opinion that dissents from the current mania for gay marriage is not to be tolerated.
