TV Land yanks ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ reruns: ‘This country has lost its damn mind’

They used to be “just the good ol’ boys, never meanin’ no harm,” but now they’re smack dab in the middle of the Confederate battle flag controversy.

A representative of TV Land confirmed Tuesday that reruns of the popular 1980s TV series “The Dukes of Hazzard” are being pulled from the station’s lineup, Fox News reported.

Although the network didn’t say why it pulled the show, it seems obvious since it’s been criticized following the Charleston church massacre for it’s use of the Confederate battle flag atop the Duke’s car “The General Lee.” It also seems obvious because, as one Twitter user put it, “this country has lost its damn mind.”

The move follows a decision by Warner Bros., which owns the series, to halt production of “Dukes”-themed merchandise the features the flag.

The man who was said to be the inspiration for the show, former bootlegger Jerry Rushing, talked to the Daily Mail about the controversy:

Speaking to Daily Mail Online, Mr Rushing said: “It’s just a flag. It doesn’t matter to me. If it causes their problem, that’s their view.

“It should not be used for hate. It’s just a pretty flag. I think it’s a very beautiful flag and that’s it.

“I think really in truth it should be left there and everybody using it for hate should be prosecuted with the full extent of the law.

“Burning it and shooting it is bad. It does represent the Confederate War and they did have a Confederate War and it wasn’t right.

“That was the flag of the Confederacy, it don’t think it should be done away with.’

Mr Rushing – also known as ‘Snake’ – became the inspiration for the Dukes of Hazzard after telling his story of how he used to drive illegal shipments of whiskey to movie producer Gy Waldron in the 1970s.

The Twitterverse was torn between amusement and outrage at the latest absurdity.
