Russian religious leaders from the former atheist Soviet Union say they can confirm what many Americans already believe – the increasing antagonism toward religious faith that’s being seen in Western governments is following the trend that marked Eastern Europe in the post-war years.
And the consequences could be dire.
A growing number of Orthodox notability is warning of a societal apocalypse if Westerners continue to turn away from God, the Washington Times reported.
“The general political direction of the [Western political] elite bears, without doubt, an anti-Christian and anti-religious character,” Patriarch Kirill, leader of the Orthodox Church in Moscow said.
“We have been through an epoch of atheism, and we know what it is to live without God.
“We want to shout to the whole world, ‘Stop!’”
The situation in the West isn’t comparable to Russia’s, of course.
The Russian Orthodox church has allied itself with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who made his bones as an agent in the Soviet KGB. When he’s not plotting the invasion of his neighbors, Putin wows the lapdog Russian media posing as a defender of “traditional values” — a grotesque mutilation of language considering the genocidally murderous regime he served most of his life.

Still, the Russian religious leaders’ words carry some weight, as last week’s United States Supreme Court ruling to legalize same-sex marriage has many Christian Americans fearing the decision will lead to more government attacks on religious freedom. Scenes from the recent gay pride celebrations, including an incident where gay activists spit on a Catholic Priest, only cemented the concern.
The Kremlin’s stance on traditional values has taken a much harder and authoritative line than Constitution-loving Americans would ever accept. For example, Russia adopted a new law banning “homosexual propaganda” and another that makes it a criminal offense to “insult” the religious sensibilities of believers, the Times reported.

America certainly wasn’t heading in that direction, but there has been concern by conservatives that these Russian style tactics – namely the liberal pastime of banning anything and everything – could be used against their religious liberty, especially after the SCOTUS gay marriage ruling.
Other Russian Orthodox Church figures, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, a church spokesman, are comparing the West to the old Soviet Union.
“The separation of the secular and the religious is a fatal mistake by the West,” Rev. Chaplin said, according to the Times.
“It is a monstrous phenomenon that has occurred only in Western civilization and will kill the West, both politically and morally.”
