Whatever happened to the eulogy?
President Barack Obama turned what should have been a eulogy for the slain Rev. Clementa Pinckney on Friday into an impassioned stump speech against racism and for gun control.
It became so partisan that one person referred to it as “a race hate speech with a southern accent.”
Nonetheless, the adoring media loved him for it.
He also assumed the mantle of a traveling preacher of the Gospel when he led the mourners in Charleston, South Carolina, in a rousing rendition of “Amazing Grace” to honor all nine churchgoers who were slain there last week.
But then he got down to business, and addressed the issues he was really there to talk about: gun control and racial inequality.
“It would be a betrayal to everything Rev. Pinckney stood for if we allow ourselves to slip into a comfortable silence again,” Obama said.
“To settle for symbolic gestures without following up with the hard work of more lasting change, that’s how we lose our way again.”
Referring to the Confederate flag as a symbol of “systemic oppression and racial subjugation,” he said that “by taking down that flag we express God’s grace.”
“For too long, we were blind to the pain that the Confederate flag stirred in too many of our citizens,” the president said.
Then he addressed the issue of gun control.
“Sporadically, our eyes are open,” Obama said, referring to mass killings in Newtown, Connecticut.; Aurora, Colorado.; and Charleston. “But I hope we also see that 30 precious lives are cut short by gun violence every single day.”

Well, yeah, it was a rousing speech. But did he actually eulogize Pinckney?
