A British father of two risked his life to save that of his fiancée during a terrorist attack in Tunisia that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
The terrorist, disguised as a regular beachgoer, puled a gun out of his umbrella and opened fire on innocent civilians on a Tunisian beach Friday, leaving at least 39 people dead and another 36 injured.
During the attack, all Matthew James could think of was saving the life of his love and making sure his children knew he loved them.
“He told me, ‘I love you, babe. But just go — tell our children that their daddy loves them,” his fiancée, Saera Wilson, told BBC News.
She said she had to leave him there riddled with bullets and drenched in blood, not knowing what his fate would be.
“He was covered in blood from the shots, but he just told me to run away,” Wilson said.
“It was the bravest thing I’ve ever known. But I just had to leave him under the sunbed because the shooting just kept on coming,” she said.
Wilson ran to their hotel room, passing a body floating in a swimming pool along the way, and hid in a cupboard until it was safe to come out, according to BBC News.
Later she discovered that her heroic fiancé was among the survivors of the attack.
James was shot three times, in the chest, hip and shoulder, and suffered a heart attack and a shattered pelvis, Wilson told BBC News at James’ hospital bedside.
She says their goal now is to get him well and home to his children.
It was an ultimate act of bravery that proves chivalry is not dead.
