Justice Thomas invokes slavery; newspaper kills all dissent on gay marriage

Justice Clarence Thomas has a huge problem with Friday’s Supreme Court decision making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states, while one newspaper has a bigger problem with dissenting views.

In his dissent, Thomas invoked America’s past with slavery to illustrate his chagrin at the court’s majority opinion, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, which cited the importance of giving people “equal dignity.”

The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away.

One newspaper decided the Supreme Court’s decision gave it permission to squelch opposing views altogether.

The PennLive/The Patriot News media group announced on its website that it “now crosses another threshold.”

“As a result of Friday’s ruling, PennLive/The Patriot-News will very strictly limit op-Eds and letters to the editor in opposition to same-sex marriage,” the post read.

“These unions are now the law of the land. And we will not publish such letters and op-Eds any more than we would publish those that are racist, sexist or anti-Semitic.”

Those who value freedom of speech reacted strongly to the quashing of the long-held newspaper tradition of open debate and tolerance of opposing positions.
