Taxpayers pay for rainbow crosswalks in Philly

It’s good to be gay in the City of Brotherly Love.

Philadelphia let its priorities be known when it had crosswalks in an area dubbed the “Gayborhood” painted in bright rainbow colors.

The walkways debuted Thursday and are adorned in stripes of red, orange, yellow, green and blue to represent the gay movement’s rainbow symbol, courtesy of Philly taxpayers.

Already they’re catching the eyes of passersby, reported And how could they not? The rainbow squares look like they could be spotted from a plane high above.

“They’re very representative of the history and the future of the city,” passerby Christina Meinhardt told

“The gay community is integrating into everyday life,” Meinhardt said.

The rainbow crosswalk is situated between a child-care service and a play area, reported Meinhardt likes that idea and thinks it represents “a really nice mesh of family life, city life and gay life.”

The brand-new crosswalk came out just after Philly’s gay pride parade earlier this month and just before Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states.

But the crosswalks would have happened regardless, as plans had been in the works for years, reported

Last March, Philly Pride Presents senior adviser Chuck Volz told the Philadelphia Gay News that the $26,000 cost to install the crosswalk was too high. So, he met with city officials to devise a plan.

“We eventually came to the solution that the city would cover the costs of installing the crosswalks, and we would be responsible for the maintenance,” Volz said. “It is not going to cost Philly Pride anything to install the crosswalks.”

How great for Philly Pride. Not so much for taxpayers who may have more pressing priorities.

The rainbow crosswalks will be dedicated at the Annual Reminders Block Party on July 5, honoring the 50th anniversary of the first U.S. LGBT-rights group demonstrations, reported

There was no mention of the cost of rainbow maintenance.
