The blood was barely dry at the mass murder site in a Charleston, S.C., church before a former Obama administration official used news of the killings Wednesday as an opportunity to score partisan political points against Republican Gov. Nikki Haley.
Brandon Friedman, the former deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, tried to tie Haley’s defense of South Carolina’s Confederate flag – displayed outside the statehouse – to the slaughter at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

While a frantic manhunt was underway – and long before the suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof, was arrested in Shelby, N.C. Thursday – Friedman seemed all too willing to embrace the advice of another former Obama official, Rahm Emanuel:
“Never let a crisis go to waste.”

Friedman’s rush to politicize the death of nine people was not well received on Twitter. Users condemned the callous attempt at partisanship in droves, with only a few scattered posts defending his comments.
@BFriedmanDC it wouldn’t be every day life if there wasn’t a liberal somewhere trying to capitalize on a tragedy…

@PatDollard @BFriedmanDC @POTUS All about an agenda. They could care less about the loss of life only the gains they can make politically.
