A California resident claimed on Facebook that he was served a deep-fried rat from a local KFC, and the story — along with photos of the “rat” — have gone viral.
Devorise Dixon said the outlet management admitted to the disgusting mishap and apologized after he posted a picture of the “rat” to his Facebook account.
According to the myth-busting website Snopes.com, the story of the rat being served in a KFC bucket is “one of the hoariest of food contamination urban legends” and has been around since at least the mid-1970s.
Dixon’s story and photo have still managed to disgust social media users across the globe, and is proving to be a nightmare for KFC’s public relations.

KFC has been responding to concerned patrons, saying that it has been unable to determine if a rat was indeed deep-fried and served to a customer.
“We have extended the opportunity to have an independent lab evaluate the product at our own expense, but the customer refuses to provide the product in question,” KFC said on their Facebook page. “Food safety is our highest priority worldwide and we take allegations of this nature extremely seriously.”

While some social media users have proven to be skeptical of Dixon’s claims, most users seemed pretty willing to use his story as a disgusting reason to avoid the fast food chain in general.
