Video: Metallica rocks out ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ for NBA finals

“The Star-Spangled Banner” in heavy metal? Oh yeah, and totally American, dude.

Sunday marked Game 5 of the NBA finals when the Cleveland Cavaliers met the Golden State Warriors on the Warriors’ home turf in Oakland. But Sunday was also the 240th anniversary of the U.S. Army, as well as Flag Day, so the teams had to do something special.

The NBA called on members of Metallica, who also call Oakland their hometown, to present their own version of the national anthem.

It was totally instrumental, with guitarists James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett playing the patriotic song in harmony.

Other rock groups and musicians have tried their hands at the national anthem — most notably, of course, Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, and, more recently the band Madison Rising. Add Metallica to your list of favorites.

As for the game, the Warriors beat the Cavs 104-91, giving Golden State a 3-2 edge.
