Relatives of 9/11 victims FURIOUS as memorial goes on auction block

Plenty of eyebrows are being raised over a “disgracefulonline auction of a 9/11 monument, including those of a retired fire chief whose son died in the Twin Towers.

The American flag-draped 40-foot high, 20-ton memorial is made from two steel beams from the World Trade Center’s North Tower, according to Fox News.

The memorial was erected by Old Dominion Brick Company in Salem, Va., in 2003, to commemorate all the victims of 9/11. The owner sold the company in 2005 and the new owner is now liquidating everything, according to the New York Post.

The auction is being coordinated by Richmond-based Motleys Asset Disposition Group, and the online auction page says “proceeds from the auction house to be donated to the 9/11 Memorial Fund.”

Retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches told the Post the auction is “sickening” — his son, Jimmy, was a firefighter killed on 9/11.

“I think it’s disgraceful,” Riches said. “It wasn’t meant to be sold. I don’t think they have the right to sell it.”

“My son was in the North Tower with other men from Engine 4,” he added. “They got up to the 30th floor. That could have been one of the last beams they stood on.”

A funny thing happened on ‘White Appreciation Day’ . . .

The original owner of the company, Fletcher Smoak Jr., is “sick” over the auction.

“This is a permanent memorial,” he told the Post. “This was dedicated. We had an Episcopal minister consecrate it, and we put a plaque on it with names of officers and the 91st Psalm. It’s just sick to take this.”

A sentiment that others appear to share, as Fox News reported that bidding stands at just over $1,000.
