When The New York Times draws the ire of committed liberal Jon Stewart, you can be sure “The Gray Lady” has really stepped in it.
The Comedy Central host ripped The Times on Wednesday for a couple of articles targeting Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, saying the paper was “treating inconsequential gossip like serious concerns.”
(That’s the entire premise of Stewart’s show, some would argue.)
The Times first dropped the bombshell that Rubio had received four traffic tickets over an 18-year period, then followed up on that stellar example of yellow journalism with an article that called the Florida senator’s spending habits into question.
The article noted that Rubio purchased an $80,000 “luxury speedboat,” among other things — it was actually a relatively modest fishing boat.
“How is this front page news?” Stewart asked. “I can’t think of a single person who would be bothered by this.”

The second article said Rubio used the royalties from his autobiography to splurge on things like “…an in-ground pool, a handsome brick driveway, meticulously manicured shrubs and oversize windows.”
“Oversized windows!” Stewart cried in a display of mock outrage. “Oh, what’s the matter, senator? The normal amount of light isn’t good enough for you?”
After showing a clip of Times’ Mid-Atlantic Bureau Chief Sheryl Gay Stolberg defending the articles as part of “the game,” Stewart fired back that the newspaper could “exercise editorial control.”
A novel concept, we agree.
