2 girls raising money for a Father’s Day present crushed by govt. red tape

Government red tape has claimed the life of another small business – a really small business.

Two entrepreneurial young girls – 7- and 8-year-olds, actually – had their lemonade stand shut down by police in Overton, Texas, because they didn’t have the appropriate city permits, a local news station reported.

Andria and Zoey Green had planned to raise some money so they could buy a Father’s Day gift, but the young scofflaws were caught skirting both city and state regulations.

Although the city was kind enough to waive the $150 fee for a “peddler’s permit,” the health department is proving to be more of an obstacle.

According to Texas law, any food or drinks requiring temperature control to prevent spoilage must be subjected to health department inspection. Since lemonade can spoil without refrigeration, the health department decided it will need to inspect the kitchen where the girls’ lemonade is made before granting a permit.

Their mother, Sandi Green, says the law goes too far.

“I think that’s ridiculous. I think they’re 7 and 8 and they’re just trying to make money for their own cause,” she told KLTV.

Given the regulatory burden of operating a cardboard lemonade stand in Overton, the Greens should just be happy they won’t have to comply with minimum wage laws when they re-open.
