U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew faced a heckling, jeering crowd Sunday when he defended the Obama administration’s nuclear talks with Iran in front of an audience of some of Israel’s most influential policy makers and opinion shapers.
Lew was speaking at the fourth annual Jerusalem Post Annual Conference, a gathering of politicians and journalists at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.
The catcalls began at about the 3-minute mark in the video, which was provided by The Jerusalem Post.
“I would only ask that you listen to me as we listen to you,” Lew told the crowd, after the Jerusalem Post’s editor-in-chief rebuked the hecklers, according to the Post.
Lew remarked, “No administration has done more for Israel’s security than this one,” a demonstrably false assertion which drew the crowd’s ire.
Twitter users exploded in resentment.
“The simple fact is this: no administration has done more for #Israel’s security than this one,” Jack Lew tells @Jerusalem_Post conference.

@APDiploWriter @Jerusalem_Post The Obama administration is simply taunting Israel. Leftists demand that you affirm their lies.

@APDiploWriter @Jerusalem_Post And he said this with a straight face?

Others online expressed embarrassment for the crowd’s impolite treatment of a senior US cabinet member.

I have never seen a surlier reception to a senior Administration official as the audience showing to Jack Lew at Jerusalem Post meet

Not everyone agreed that the audience acted shamefully, with some tweeting that it is Lew who should be ashamed for his remarks.
@jacobkornbluh @Jerusalem_Post Lew’s lies are shameful. The audience knows the o’s administrations’ deceptive, destructive policies.

@jacobkornbluh @Jerusalem_Post what is shameful is the Secretary lying along with the “Liar in Chief”. They lie all the time.

@ChemiShalev @JeffreyGoldberg Given the level of animosity between the current US admin and Israel, it is not surprising nor undeserved.
