Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker went on the offensive in an interview Sunday over questions about his readiness to handle international questions as a potential presidential candidate, blasting a jibe President Obama once directed at him that Walker needs to “bone up on foreign policy.”
Obama should try it himself, Walker said.
In an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Walker said he thought it was strange that Obama, who has been so drastically wrong about such foreign policy questions as the abilities of the Islamic State terrorists or his own disastrous policy in Yemen, would have the chutzpa to criticize someone else.
Walker has been a consistent front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination even though he has yet to announce that he’s a candidate.
He also showed he’s apparently taken to heart Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment — “thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican” — during his interview for “This Week,” with ABC’s Jonathan Karl.
He told Karl that although “governors are well-tested leaders,” and therefore make ideal candidates for the White House, he added that “someone like [Sen.] Marco Rubio I have real confidence in.”
Similarly, he had nothing but praise for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, another as yet unannounced front-runner.
Under questioning, Walker acknowledged that he hasn’t fulfilled a promise to create 250,000 jobs by 2015 — a goal he fell “quite a bit short of,” according to Karl. But Walker reminded Karl that that was the only goal he’d missed, and that he still managed to bring unemployment down “almost in half” to 4.4 percent, well below national figures.
Walker chuckled when Karl reminded him of Obama’s admonition that Walker “bone up on foreign policy.”
“I thought it was interesting for the president to say that,” Walker said. “The guy who called ISIS the J.V. squad and Yemen a success story somehow suggesting someone else should bone up on foreign policy.”
But he acknowledged he has been boning up, meeting with world leaders, former secretaries of state and U.S. military generals.
“It’s not about being prepared for debates,” he said. “It’s about being prepared to be the president of the United States.”
