Why aren’t Dems calling Nancy Pelosi a racist?

Why isn’t anyone calling her a racist?

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Thursday that finding votes to support President Obama’s trade agenda is not her responsibility.

Saying the onus is on Republican leadership, Pelosi shrugged off any notion that Democrat leadership should be involved in building support on Capitol Hill for a central piece of Obama’s second term trade agenda.

“It’s absolutely the Speaker’s responsibility,” Pelosi said, according to the Hill.com. “Every time we had a bill that came to the floor when I was Speaker he said it was a test of my leadership. It’s a test of his.”

Despite the overwhelming Republican majority in the House, Speaker John Boehner has had trouble gathering the 200 votes necessary to pass the President’s trade plan. The Huffington Post suggested that many Republicans oppose the bill simply because Obama supports it.

“A chunk of their conservative wing opposes trade, or simply doesn’t want to be seen helping out the president,” the Huffington Post wrote.

However, many Democrats – Pelosi included – have not only opposed the bill, but have shown little interest in giving aid to a second term agenda put forward by their ally in the White House.

In the past, Pelosi has been quick to blame Republican opposition to Obama’s agenda on racial prejudice. The most glaring example was in 2014, in response to GOP efforts to derail immigration reform.

“I think race has something to do with the fact that they’re not bringing up an immigration bill,” the California Democrat told reporters at her regular weekly press conference.

But it’s going to be hard for anyone to blame this opposition on the color of Obama’s skin. Bipartisan distrust of the President’s trade deal has made for strange allies, and Pelosi’s party is proving that opposition to Obama really isn’t based on race.
