Suddenly, Democrats care about the right to worship freely.
U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison and Andre Carson, the only two Muslims in Congress, are calling for a Justice Department investigation into a freedom rally led by former Marine Jon Ritzheimer outside of a Phoenix-area mosque.
(The two Muslim gunmen killed last month at a free speech event in Garland, Texas, reportedly attended this mosque.)
Some who attended Ritzheimer’s rally, which featured a “Draw Muhammad” contest, legally exercised their Second Amendment right to bear arms, as a Facebook page for the event recommended.
The Democrats sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Thursday, saying the armed rally-goers violated Muslim worshipers’ First Amendment-guaranteed freedom to practice religion, according to the Huffington Post.
“The decision to bring assault weapons to the mosque demonstrates intent to create a hostile environment to intimidate worshipers, a clear attempt to infringe on the First Amendment rights of the worshipers,” the letter said.
Ellison and Carson said those who attended may also be in violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, a bill passed in 1994.
The lawmakers added that they’re concerned the armed protesters created “an environment that is likely to produce imminent violence.”
“The presence of assault weapons couples with deep seeded bigotry and hate speech creates a clear and present danger to worshipers and threatens lawless action,” they said in the letter.
Imminent violence? Lawless action?
Like the nation saw recently in Baltimore, Md.?
And while it’s encouraging to see Ellison and Carson stand up for the First Amendment, Christians may wonder if the men will be supportive of their right to practice their religion.
