A Muslim woman is calling for a boycott of United Airlines claiming she suffered “humiliation” and “discrimination” Friday when a flight attendant refused to give her an unopened can of Diet Coke.
Tahera Ahmad wrote in a Facebook post, “I am in tears of humiliation from discrimination” when a flight attendant responded “Well I’m sorry I just can’t give you an unopened can so no Diet Coke for you.”
Ahmad wrote that when she asked why, the flight attendant then told her “We are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane.” She continued her story, adding that another passenger “looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘yes you know you would use it as a weapon” and told her to shut up.
“I felt the hate in his voice and his raging eyes,” Ahmad wrote.
Ahmad’s post ignited a social media movement with the hashtags #BoycottUnitedAirlines and #IslamophobiaISREAL.

Neither Ahmad’s post nor United Airlines referred to the flight attendant’s skin color. Ahmad’s claim was one of religious, not racial discrimination.
United called the whole incident a “misunderstanding” in a statement on its blog.
The flight attendant onboard Shuttle America flight 3504 attempted several times to accommodate Ms. Ahmad’s beverage request after a misunderstanding regarding a can of diet soda. The inflight crew met with Ms. Ahmad after the flight arrived in Washington to provide assistance and further discuss the matter. Additionally, we spoke with Ms. Ahmad this afternoon to get a better understanding of what occurred and to apologize for not delivering the service our customers expect when traveling with us. We look forward to having the opportunity to welcome Ms. Ahmad back.
Ahmad tweeted her dissatisfaction with the airline’s response. She wrote that the airline has “dismissed my entire narrative and trivialized it to a can of soda.”

“I have dedicated my life to peace,” she wrote, saying she was on the flight to “promote social justice activism.”
In typical liberal fashion, Ahmad claimed a dedication to peace, while rejecting all attempts to reconcile with the airline. Once offended, all that matters to Ahmad is her narrative.
