House Minority Leader Nancy PelosiĀ proved just out of touch with reality she is on Friday when she criticized Sen. Marco Rubio as a bad Catholic because of his opposition to same-sex marriage — in the same week the Vatican agreed with Rubio by calling an Irish referendum approving gay weddings “a defeat for humanity.”
During her appearance on āMSNBC Liveā Friday, the California Democrat claimed Rubio, as well as anyone else whoĀ didnāt subscribe to same-sex marriage, was out of step with the mainstream as well as Catholic doctrine.
MSNBC host Thomas Roberts asked for Pelosiās thoughts after playing a clip of the Florida Republican voicing his fear that those who support Catholic doctrine on same-sex marriage being labeled as homophobes and engaging in hate speech.
āI think that this statement by Senator Rubio is most unfortunate,ā Pelosi told Roberts. āIt’s a polarizing statement. The fact is, is that what we’re taught was to respect people in our faith and to say that this endangers mainstream Christian thinking is so completely wrong.ā
Pelosi totally missed the mark. Rubio never said he didnāt respect gays and lesbians. He said that same-sex marriage runs counter to Catholic doctrine and feared that those who hold to their faith will be accused of engaging in hate speech.
Itās a common practice of liberals — if you canāt come up with a reasonable argument, engage in name-calling.
Pelosi closed her thoughts by appearing to speak for the Vatican.
āI donāt even think that Pope Francis would subscribe to what Marco Rubio just said,ā Pelosi opined.
Considering that the Vatican’s secretary of state criticized the Ireland referendum that legalized gay marriage last week a “defeat for humanity,” it’s pretty clear Nancy Pelosi doesn’t understand the church she claims to believe in.
That church’s official position on Pelosi is pretty clear, too. Two years ago, the Vaticanās highest legal authority excoriated Pelosi for her unbridled support of abortion.
Cardinal Raymond Burke, archbishop emeritus of St. Louis, Mo., and prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura at the Vatican, said that Pelosi should be denied the sacrament of Holy Communion.
And when he said that, he wasnāt merely yammering on a talk show — he was rendering a legal opinion based on canon law, according to CNS News.
āCertainly this is a case when Canon 915 must be applied,ā said Cardinal Burke in an interview reprinted on Sept. 5 inĀ The Wanderer, a national Catholic weekly. āThis is a person who obstinately, after repeated admonitions, persists in a grave sin — cooperating with the crime of procured abortion–and still professes to be a devout Catholic.ā
In an earlier MSNBC interview, Pelosi went so far as to say that pro-life GOP lawmakers āneed a lesson on the birds and the bees,ā according to LifeNews.com. It was statements like this that concerned Burke.
āThis is a prime example of what Blessed John Paul II referred to as the situation of Catholics who have divorced their faith from their public life and therefore are not serving their brothers and sisters in the way that they must–in safeguarding and promoting the life of the innocent and defenseless unborn, in safeguarding and promoting the integrity of marriage and the family,ā said the cardinal.
She obviously never took the cardinalās legal opinion to heart — last year she accepted Planned Parenthoodās highest honor, the Margaret Sanger Award, for her pro-abortion work, according to The Daily Caller.
Florida-based conservative activist Lori Hendry took notice of Pelosiās engagement of āthe pot calling the kettle black,ā and tweeted:
