Manhattan’s ritzy The Standard hotel found itself facing a wave of criticism over the weekend after a bouncer banned a U.S. Navy officer from entering its lounge because her dress whites didn’t meet the watering hole’s dress code.
According to the New York Daily News, the spat started Saturday when the Navy officer was part of a foursome heading for cocktails at the Top of the Standard lounge. No go, a doorman said.
“I said, ‘Wait, are you rejecting us because someone is in a service uniform?’” one of the party, Ryan O’Connor, told the Daily News. “He just kind of rolled his eyes and wouldn’t budge.”
An appeal to the hotel’s front desk didn’t get anywhere either.
“We were all shocked and upset,” O’Connor said said. “This was Memorial Day weekend and walking distance from Ground Zero. This should have been a no-brainer.”
It probably should have been, considering Fleet Week in New York has been an official part of the city’s calendar since 1984 – and the city’s experience with the Navy go back to when it was British tars and the Union Jack not the Stars and Stripes in the harbor.
Once the word got out though, it was a no-brainer for the hotel to apologize for treating a United States Navy officer like a street bum. The officer herself, a Rhode Island native stationed in Virginia, declined to comment to the Daily News.
But the hotel issued an email saying she would be welcome back, any time.
“We most certainly do appreciate and take a lot of pride (in) all the young people giving their lives to defend our nation,” The Standard’s Manager wrote to the family, according to the Daily News.
“As per regular protocol, our team at the Top of The Standard is instructed to enforce a dress code — which obviously should not apply to military uniforms. Once again, our sincere apologies for the miscommunication at our end, the issue has been brought to all of our team’s attention and it will certainly not repeat itself.”
But the hotel’s apology wasn’t enough for some social media users, who didn’t like the way the sailor got the bum’s rush.

That’s a little strong, maybe. But the commenter had company.
@DRUDGE_REPORT ..no respect and a standard apology is unsatisfactory. the fellow should be fired..

I am surprised by that doorman’s ignorance, and during Fleet Week, no less. http://t.co/BjnfXBlDVV
