A Georgia family is gearing up for a legal fight after the mother was arrested and put in shackles because of her son’s unexcused school absences.
Julie Giles, a substitute teacher, wrote on her Facebook page that she turned herself in to police after a warrant was issued for her arrest.
She wrote that her son Samuel, a fourth-grader, had a total of 12 unexcused absences, which is six more than is allowed by the Screven County school district, but said her son’s doctor reissued three of his notes, making the actual total three over the limit.
And her son’s grades are good, according to the Daily Mail. He is on the honor roll at Screven Elementary and has has four As and four Bs in his classes, the paper reported.
Giles told Fox News’ Steve Doocy on “Fox & Friends” Friday that she received a certified letter the day before Mother’s Day telling her a warrant would be issued for her arrest.
According to her Facebook page, she turned herself in on May 14 and was released the same day.
“I was not fingerprinted, but I was shackled and they took my mug shot, which will be in our local newspaper,” she told Steve Doocy Friday.
Doocy asked her if this happened often in her state.
“I don’t believe that it happens often in the state,” she said. “I’ve contacted surrounding counties that do not handle it this way. I believe that it happens frequently in my county.”
Screven County Schools Superintendent William Bland told WTOC that several parents were already convicted this year.
“It’s important for these children to be in school and I think the courts recognize that,” he said.
Giles and her husband, Ken, think it’s important that courts recognized the needs of families. A GoFundMe account has been established for the couple’s legal fight in the case against her and has raised $600 of the family’s $2,500 goal, according to the Daily Mail.
The couple is also getting free legal assistance fromt he National Association of Parents, according to the Daily Mail.
Giles told Fox News she plans on moving so her children can attend another school system.
“We are relocating,” she said. “I do not believe that after this has happened that my children will be treated fairly in the school system, so we are going to move.”
She is currently awaiting a court date.
