It just keeps getting uglier and uglier for the young Boston University sociology professor who used social media to make racially charged statements against white men and then mocked a white woman who was a rape victim.
Now, it turns out Saida Grundy was charged with felony identity theft in 2008, prompted by a fit of jealousy.
While she was still a University of Michigan graduate student, Grundy set up a fake account in another woman’s name on fling.com, an adult website, according to Boston.com.
“When this incident occurred I was 24, and exercised the poor judgment of a heartbroken 24 year old,” she told the newspaper in a statement. “I took accountability then as I do now. I hold true to the lessons learned, and my life has since moved on.”
Yeah, she “moved on,” all right. She moved on to calling white males a “problem population” on Twitter, and then cruelly made fun of a white rape victim on Facebook in an over-the-top rant.
As for the earlier incident, Boston.com reported:
In December 2007, Grundy created a fake account on adult website Fling.com. The account profile depicted a woman who was dating a man with whom Grundy had also been involved. Grundy got photos of the woman, who lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, from the man’s email account.
The Virginia woman discovered the fake account in her name in June 2008. She called her local police, who then contacted law enforcement in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Grundy admitted responsibility to the police, telling them that “This was a jealous thing regarding another man,” according to Boston.com.
She was subsequently charged with identity theft and using a computer to commit a crime — both felonies. In exchange for prosecutors dropping the felony charges, Grundy pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of malicious use of a telecommunications service.
Steve Burgay, Boston University’s senior vice president of external affairs, offered a statement on Grundy’s past.
“A number of years ago, when she was a student at the University of Michigan, Dr. Grundy made a mistake,” Burgay told Boston.com.
“She admitted the mistake, accepted the consequences, and brought closure to that case,” he continued. “Eight years later, we do not see any reason to reopen it.”
But she continues to use computers to make stupid mistakes, and some social media users were amazed she’s still gainfully employed in a responsible position.
