While too many Americans view Memorial Day solely as a time of barbecues and cold beers, a group of veterans is asking patriots to take a few moments out t0 remember what the day represents.
Memorial Day is set aside to honor America’s fallen heroes — it’s not a celebration (as someone ought to tell the president).
The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, or IAVA, is asking Americans for their pledge to #GoSilent for a moment beginning 12:01 p.m. Eastern on Monday.
According to the group’s website:
The #GoSilent campaign allows for a shared, nationwide experience, in which pledges can be made in honor of a fallen veteran or service member. The moment of silence will coincide with events in New York, Washington, D.C., and across the country, including IAVA’s participation in a wreath laying before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, a ceremony aboard the USS Intrepid in New York City, and local Memorial Day events nation-wide.
The IAVA, founded in 2004, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan New York-based advocacy group for veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It quietly began its #GoSilent campaign only a few years ago in response to what its members considered Americans’ loss of Memorial Day’s meaning.
The response to IAVA’s call has been overwhelming, and after taking the pledge on IAVA’s website, people have shown their support by getting the word out on social media, using the hashtag #GoSilent.
Many of the posts include special tributes as to who they plan to #GoSilent for. Here are a few examples:
