Ben Carson wins straw poll with message of faith: ‘Stop letting them bully us!’

With several top competitors trapped in Washington, D.C., doing the work they were elected to do, Ben Carson won the presidential straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference on Saturday with an inspiring message of keeping the faith.

The retired neurosurgeon topped the crowded GOP field with 25.4 percent of the vote, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker coming in second with 20.5 percent.

Taking a stand on religious liberty was at the center of the GOP presidential contenders message, according to The Hill.

“Don’t let the secular progressives drive God out of our lives,” Carson told the Oklahoma City audience.

“We have to stop letting them bully us,” he cautioned. ‘We back down too easily. It’s an important part of who we are.”

Drawing on America’s founding principles, Carson said government was not meant to control people’s beliefs and challenged those present to shrink the role of bureaucracy in their lives, The Hill reported.

“The fact of the matter is that I believe our founders set up a system that wasn’t supposed to cater to a political class,” he said. “It was supposed to cater to the people.

“We’ve gotten everything confused.”

Carson told attendees “our unity is through our strength,” and said Americans have to stop making everything into a political issue. He saw energy resources as an area where America can come together.

“This country has so much energy,” he said. “It is unbelievable what God has blessed us with. Developing our energy, our fossil fuels, does not have to be at odds with people who want green energy.”

Apparently, Carson has yet to meet the eco-fascists that make up the environmental movement.
