VA scandal swept under rug; ‘Just ONE person fired!’ Boehner fumes

House Speaker John Boehner emerged this week from relative quiet to question a lack of accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs after last year’s scandal that resulted in dozens of veterans dying as they waited for care.

“Just one person has been fired. One,” the Ohio Republican said in a fiery speech from the House floor. “What the hell happened to the rest of them?”

Fox News host Martha MacCallum discussed Boehner’s remarks Thursday on “America’s Newsroom,” one year after the scandal broke.

VA Secretary Robert McDonald said during a TV interview in February that 60 people connected with the scandal has been “fired.”

The New York Times later reported that the number was far less.

“In fact, the department quickly clarified after that interview, only 14 people had been removed from their jobs, while about 60 others had received lesser punishments,” The Times reported.

But the newspaper added that “new internal documents show that the real number of people removed from their jobs is much smaller still: at most, three.”

The three included one person who retired in lieu of being fired and a pending termination, resulting in the net sum of one person being fired for the scandal itself.

Boehner called on the VA to take care of veterans as well as they take care “of the bureaucrats.”

And with Memorial Day around the corner, he called on President Obama to “clean up this mess, saying the president “owes the American people a real, long-term plan to fix the VA… Not a promise or a pledge or a rearranging of deck chairs: a real plan to clean up this mess.”
