U.S. Rep. Alcee L. Hastings thinks it’s time taxpayers show him the money.
The Florida Democrat said Monday at a Rules Committee meeting that it is high time members of Congress received a pay raise due to, among other things, to the high cost of living in the D.C. area.
“Now in order for us to get a raise, we have to go to the public and prove that we deserve it,” he said. “Well, I think we do.”
Hastings described how he moved to an elite section of D.C. called Senate Square and complained about how he can could no longer afford the rent.
Hastings said he didn’t add the raise to the 2016 Legislative Branch appropriations bill the committee was considering because he knew it wouldn’t get through, but said, “The least we could have done for ourselves is to give us a tax credit.”
He said Congress is heading toward elitism.
“I predict for you 20 years out that the only people that will be able to serve in this institution will be people who are wealthy,” Hastings said.
Hastings said Congress members are going to realize “that on the salary that they make, they’re going to be unable to send their children to college.”
After the session, Hastings doubled down on those remarks when pressed by reporters.
“I’m strongly in favor of a pay raise for members commensurate with what everyone else receives as federal employees,” he said.
“We’re entering our seventh year without a pay raise,” Hastings added. “Now, I think we’ve proven to the American public that we are responsible.”
This is the same man that the Wall Street Journal said in 2009 was spending nearly $25,000 to lease a car?.
The same man Judicial Watch reported in 2012 was the congressman most engaged in nepotism, paying his girlfriend a reported salary of $622,500 from 2007-2010?
Yeah, that’s proving responsibility.
The Twitterverse wasn’t buying a bit of it.

Rep. Hastings would like pay raise for Congress, pay raises are based on performance reviews. We should get a refund not pay more. #MMWCP
