Residents in Glendale, Colo., are furious after city officials unanimously voted this week to use eminent domain to force businesses out of a 142-acre parcel of land.
One of the landowners, Nasrin Kholghy of Authentic Persian & Oriental Rugs, told “Fox & Friends” co-host Clayton Morris on Friday that her business has occupied the same piece of property for 25 years.
“We have to get eminent domain out,” she said. “It’s just not right.”
Local governments typically use eminent domain laws to make way for public projects such as roads, schools and other public buildings and infrastructure needs. But Glendale officials are using the law to pave the way for a $175 million dining and entertainment complex.
Kholghy said the city’s offers have been inadequate.
“They offered two acres of land behind a parking garage facing a street that is not a major street. Our land is six acres,” she said. “How is that fair?”
She called the offer “an insult” because her current location is on a heavily-traveled street in a prime location.
“They found a loophole to use,” she said. “They can’t do that.”
