Gowdy says State Dept. hasn’t turned over ‘a single document’ in six months; Cummings calls him a liar!

While the Democratic talking points have long been established that the GOP is slow-walking the Select Committee on Benghazi to damage Hillary Clinton‘s presidential run, panel chairman U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy said the State Department is responsible for the delays.

In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, Gowdy complained that “not a single document” requested from the agency in the last six months has been produced, according to the Washington Examiner.

cummings-gowdy“You pledged your support and cooperation for the work of this committee when you assumed your current duties … yet the committee finds itself in the same place it was six months ago … — not one single piece of paper or email has been produced to the select committee from the 7th floor principals,” Gowdy wrote.

And this comes despite the panel issuing a subpoena in March.

Gowdy told Kerry that the State Department’s pace is making his job “impossible,” and made it clear that Clinton will not testify before his panel until he has all the relevant documents.

“The committee must have the records of communication requested more than six months ago before the secretary’s appearance can be scheduled,” the chairman wrote.

Clinton was expected to testify next week, but that appearance is now unlikely.

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the ranking Democrat on the Benghazi panel, dismissed Gowdy’s complaint — naturally — saying the GOP is on “a fishing expedition for anything they can use against Secretary Clinton in her presidential campaign.”

“The Committee has had Secretary Clinton’s emails for months,” Cummings said, according to the Examiner.

“This new claim that the department has not produced a single responsive document is completely baseless and appears to be yet another excuse to drag out Secretary Clinton’s testimony until closer to the election.”

Nevertheless, Gowdy and the GOP have the public on their side.

According to a Fox News poll released Thursday, 56 percent of voters want Congress to continue the investigation of Benghazi.
