With hat in hand, ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos went before the American people Friday morning to apologize for not disclosing $75,000 in donations to the Clinton Foundation.
An oversight he called a “mistake.”
“I should have gone the extra mile to avoid even the appearance of a conflict,” Stephanopoulos said during a live segment of ABC’s Good Morning America. “I apologize to all of you for failing to do that.”
Since news broke of the donations this week, the former Clinton staffer and communications director has been been under heavy fire for reporting on the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation without disclosing the conflict.
Stephanopoulos recused himself Thursday from moderating a 2016 presidential debate next February.
Contrite or not, media analyst Joe Concha said Friday that Stephanopoulos “needs to remove himself from ABC’s ‘This Week’ on Sunday mornings immediately.”
In a column published Friday on Mediaite, Concha said if the anchor won’t do it himself, then ABC News management needs to do it for him.
Charles Krauthammer goes on attack:
Obama ‘doesn’t know a damn thing about Fox!’
Pointing to “a partisan interview” recently with Peter Schweizer, the author of “Clinton Cash,” he said Stephanopoulos was “trying to destroy a narrative as if he was getting paid to do it.”
“In case you missed it, Schweizer’s credibility was attacked for the entire interview while exactly zero of his claims about the Clintons were even remotely entertained by the host — the same who contributed to the very foundation in question,” he wrote.
Concha also reminded readers that former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann was fired a few years ago for donating to two Democratic congressional campaigns.
First Brian Williams was removed from the air, now possibly George Stephanopoulos? There certainly was a strong consensus on social media that he should step down. Here’s a sampling from Twitter:
