A video apparently showing biology students cavorting with cat cadavers is becoming a cause celebre for pet lovers after an animal rights group made it public Tuesday.
According to the New York Daily News, the video was posted on social media last fall, and purports to show students from Oklahoma City’s Harding Charter Prepatory High School manipulating the feline corpses in a dance line to the tune of the Meow Mix cat food jingle.
The cats were already dead and intended for dissection at the prestigious charter school, the Daily News reported.
But that didn’t stop People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, a group that puts the same value on animal life as it does human, from kicking up a public fuss with the school and state officials – and, of course, releasing the video to the media.
“Surely this video is not educational and clearly demonstrates a disrespect for the animals that are being cut apart at Harding Charter Prep,” PETA’s science education specialist, Samantha Suiter, told the Daily News.
According to a Daily News summary of email correspondence released by PETA, Harding Charter principal Justin Hunt acknowledged to a state official in April that the actions in the video were “out of line” but “said he disagreed with PETA’s suggestion that the school switch to computer software allowing for digital representation of animal anatomy.”
It was unclear when the video was actually made or, since human faces are blurred, what other circumstances were involved.
“Most of the students in the video were no longer students here at HCP when I had received the video, so they were not punished,” he wrote. “However, I have had conversations with the teacher. She has ensured me that this will never happen again.”
