President Obama‘s six-year feud with Fox News took on new life Tuesday when Obama singled the network out once again in a speech at Georgetown University, and two of its top names fired right back hours later.
“I think the effort to suggest that the poor are sponges, leeches, don’t want to work, are lazy, are undeserving, got traction,” Obama told the Georgetown audience, not exactly hostile terrain for the Democrat president.
“And look, it’s still being propagated. I mean, I have to say that if you watch Fox News on a regular basis, it is a constant menu. They will find, like, folks who make me mad. I don’t know where they find them.”
Later Tuesday, Fox Washington correspondent James Rosen appeared on Fox News’ “The Kelly File” with host Megyn Kelly to discuss the latest Obama swipe.
Kelly played some clips of the president taking shots at the news network over the years, including a quote from an interview Obama did with “Rolling Stone” where he admitted Fox is wildly successful economically while blasting what he said is its negative affect on the country.
Rosen explained the problems with the presiden’ts logic:
“Only one of two things can be true: Either this largest of cable news audiences knows what President Obama knows, namely that Fox News is, as he frames it, is a slanted arm of the Republican party but still prefers to get its news from such a source, in which case we would assuredly be a center-right nation,” he said.
“Or, this largest of cable news audiences just hasn’t caught on to what is so obvious to the president and his aides, isn’t sophisticated enough to see what they see, in which case the White House is effectively insulting the intelligence of the American people.”
Kelly added that President Bush faced mountains of criticism, particularly from the left-leaning MSNBC, but he never took a shot at the network itself because “it was beneath the dignity of the office.”
Clearly, Obama is more comfortable with the generally friendly coverage of the mainstream networks and his lapdogs at MSNBC, but is Fox that big of a threat to the White House?
