Strangers surprise teens on prom night, causing chain reaction

A group of teenagers had a prom night they’ll never forget.

The students decided to enjoy an after prom dinner at an Indianapolis Steak ‘n Shake restaurant when they spotted an older woman talking to the manager.

The teens originally thought she was complaining about the noise the group was making but they were soon surprised by an employee who informed the youngsters the elderly couple paid the group’s bill.

“We were so shocked,” one of the teens, Adrienne Allen told WISHTV in a news segment broadcast Monday.

The waitress who served the elderly couple, Delorean Stone, said the woman explained why the couple decided to pay their bill.

“[She said] me and my husband met on prom night and we’ve been together for 45 years and he’s the love of my life and I just hope that we can do something that will help them remember that this is the start of your life,” Stone said. “It was so emotional I started crying.”

Because the elderly couple had left already, the teens didn’t get a chance to thank them, so they decided to do something nice for someone else.

“In cash we had about $76, so we pooled all of our money and presented to the waitress,” prom goer Laura Hurst told WISHTV.

“You really have to keep paying it forward,” she said. “Otherwise it doesn’t go anywhere and what’s the point?”

“The server was excited, the kids were happy, the cooks were even happy and they didn’t have anything to do with it,” Stone said. “It was just an overall beautiful thing. Community at its finest.”

Apparently the spirit of giving from Steak ’n Shake customers is contagious.

A man named Roger Fuchs handed out $20 bills to kids dining at a Missouri Steak ’n Shake, according to a story published on May 2 by the Park Hills-based Daily Journal Online.

“They were laughing and telling me that I didn’t have to do that. I gave $20 to one girl and she I didn’t have to do that because $20 would pay for both her and her date’s dinner,” he told the Daily Journal.

“I said no, I’m giving $20 to every one of you girls and every one of the boys that come in with you and that’s just something I what to do tonight and I’m going to do it.”

North County Senior Alison Caples estimated the man handed out $220 in total.

And his kind gesture was reciprocated when the mother of one of the teens at the next table paid for Fuch’s meal, according to Potosi High School junior Jordy Nickles.
