The left is losing its empty head over it, but a C-SPAN town hall video featuring a woman’s succinct description of the problem of illegal immigration is getting cheers from Americans who think the country needs to control its borders.
The town hall meeting was part of the South Carolina Freedom Summit in Greenville over the weekend, and its last speaker from the audience was the mother-in-law of David Bossie, president of the conservative non-profit Citizens United.
“People are coming in this country across the borders like rats and roaches in the wood pile,” she said. “We’ve got a state like Minnesota that says it’s not our business to check ’em out, we just register ’em. We’ve got to get control. That’s what they need to know.
The crowd roared with approval.
Naturally, the lefties at sites like the Huffington Post jumped on the clip to claim champions of laws restricting illegal immigration are a bunch of racists who think of illegal immigrants as vermin, but while the word choice might have been poor, the point wasn’t.
Every Republican candidate is going to have to explain to primary voters how he or she (Carly Fiorina) plans to handle illegal immigration. Every Democrat candidate (Hillary Clinton) will have to explain the same to rabid, leftist Democrat primary voters, too.
And when it comes to the general elections, both parties are going to have to explain to the entire country where they stand.
That’s an argument the Republicans have a good chance of winning.
But they weren’t going to win the Twitter war on this one — as denunciations poured in.

Actually, that’s not at all what happened. It was a comparison, not an identification — if a grossly insensitive one. And if the value conservatives place on human life is fairly compared to liberals, the libs come out wanting indeed. (See Gosnell, Kermit.)
But the kerfuffle caused even the emcee of the event, Republican pollster and consultant Frank Luntz to distance himself from the statements.

Yes, it would. But that’s not reality — and Luntz knows it as well as any breathing human.
Republicans are going to have to do a lot better than this if 2016 is going to be bright. What gets said at any town hall in hall in Greenville, S.C., won’t win a presidential election.
But it could lose one.
