An Indiana teen decided to ask a special senior to the junior prom — his 93-year-old great-grandmother.
Drew Holm, a junior at Crothersville Junior-Senior High, originally had no plans to attend his school’s annual dance, until his great-grandmother, Katie Keith, asked him a pointed question.
“She asked me if I was going to prom, and I said no,” Holm told WAVE News. “She’s like, ‘Why not?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t have anyone to take, and I could care less about it.’”
Keith was kidding when she replied that she would go with him, but Holm thought it was a great idea.
“I said, ‘Well, I’ve got a dress, I’ll go with you.’ I was just joking you know,” Keith said. “He said, ‘Will you go to prom with me?’ I said, ‘Drew, my goodness, I don’t want to go to the prom with you. Surely you can find a real cute girl to go with you.’”
Holm said he realized that he had already settled on the best date he could find.
“She was like, ‘No, go find someone prettier.’ I was like, ‘No, I can’t do that. You’re the prettiest woman,’” Holm told WAVE News.
To seal the deal, he even sent a formal invitation to her house.
“I thought, ‘If that kid wants me to go to the prom that bad, I’ll go, the heck with it,'” Keith said.
The school had to give Holm a special exemption to rules against taking a date over 21 years old to the dance.
Holm does have a girlfriend, but they met after he had already asked Keith to the prom, and he didn’t want to back out of his date with his great-grandmother. So he met up with his girlfriend at the after-party, according to WAVE News.
Keith and Holm said it was a night neither of them will forget. They even got a few dance steps in.
