A physician and former Ebola patient who was given an all-clear from the virus is once again being treated for Ebola infection — this time in his left eye.
And it turned the infected eye from blue to green.
Dr. Ian Crozier, a 43-year-old American physician, contracted Ebola in September as a direct result of his work in Sierra Leone with the World Health Organization, according to The Associated Press.
Atlanta’s Emory University Ebola unit released Crozier in October after finding no more trace of the disease in his blood, but two months later his left eye developed extremely high pressure and became inflamed.
Crozier’s vision in the infected eye deteriorated from 20/20 as late as November, to 20/60, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.
“It felt almost personal that the virus could be in my eye without me knowing it,” he told The New York Times.
Along with the vision problems, he also complained of joint and and muscle pains, fatigue and loss of hearing.
When Crozier returned to Emory, staff ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Yeh drained some of the ocular fluid from this left eye. Tests confirmed that it contained the virus, but his tears did not, suggesting that casual contact with Crozier was unlikely to cause infection.
Although his vision continues to improve, it’s not yet fully restored, Yeh told the AP.
The Associated Press reported:
Ebola has infected more than 26,000 people since December 2013 in West Africa. Some survivors have reported eye problems but how often they occur isn’t known. The virus also is thought to be able to persist in semen for several months.
The number of reported Ebola cases in Guinea and Sierra Leone have dropped significantly, and Liberia, which reported the greatest number of deaths from the virus — more than 4,700 — plans to declare the outbreak at an end Saturday, barring any additional cases.
